I have cabin fever and it's not the kind most people speak of. My cabin fever came from a burning desire to
furnish my new cabin in the mountains with casual elegance. I didn't want the really rustic cabin furniture nor did I want anything resembling a dead animal. I admit that I love shooting wildlife but my weapon of choice is my camera. There won't be any dead animal skulls or carcasses in my cabin. The only wildlife you will find adorning my walls will be live and in my photos.
It took a while for me to find exactly what I wanted but I was in no hurry. This cabin is a dream finally realized for my husband and me. We have always dreamed of a vacation home in the mountains that would one day become either our main home or one of two. We haven't decided yet if we will take on the snowbird lifestyle and chase the warm weather. We do know that this cabin is exactly what we wanted.
Looking for cabin furniture can be overwhelming for sure. I never realized there were so many brands and styles to choose from.
Old Hickory cabin furniture has been a familiar name to me since the days I lived in and helped my parents run the family hunting lodge. I decided to start there. I was thrilled when I found that Old Hickory had so many lines of cabin furniture. I found plenty of choices to furnish the bedrooms and even got a great breakfast room table from them.
When I decorated the great room I knew the usual cabin furniture wouldn't work for us. My husband loves leather so I purchased a beautiful leather sofa and recliners from the local furniture store. I found some great tables and bookcases in a line by Bentwood. They have been manufacturing cabin furniture for over a hundred years and I loved the quality and designs. I ended up choosing a bedroom set for the guest room from them. I love the smell of cedar in the drawers. It reminds me of my grandmother.
I love all of the cabin furniture that I purchased but if I had to pick a favorite it would be the dining room set. I found a beautiful set made from
Acacia wood. The table had extenders which would enable us to seat the entire family when they come for the holidays. The chairs were and still are my favorite part. They are my little piece of luxury in the midst of cabin life. I was able to choose a mixture of fully padded chairs and partially padded that created a look of comfort and elegance. I love them!
My favorite task when choosing all the cabin furniture was the lighting. I had seen some really beautiful artistic lamps and knew that was the look I wanted. I ended up passing up the
Dale Tiffany brand for
Meyda Tiffany lamps. They are gorgeous! Meyda has two lines of lighting. One is the rustic lamps but I choose mine from their art glass line. They have gorgeous nature scenes depicted in beautiful stained glass.
All in all my adventure in cabin furniture went well and my new mountain cabin is almost completely decorated. I saved some space for pieces I may find as I wander amidst the many antique stores. My cabin fever has been neutralized for now.
